The History of the Ball
The Electro-Swing Ball was created in 2011 to make a positive event happen out of a sad situation. Earlier that year we had lost a close friend through very tragic circumstances, and while we completely understood what happened (life is just too much of a struggle for some people), we needed something good to come out of the huge sense of loss we were feeling. Therefore, we dedicated the first Electro-Swing Ball to his memory and gave all our proceeds to a local mental health charity who had supported him at various points throughout his life. Coupled with this, we wanted to be the first people to bring the electro-swing scene to Shropshire. We love big theatrical, opulent entertainment, plus we love vintage and dressing up so we decided to combine all of those things and create a truly unique event.
The Future of the Ball
We’re really excited to take the Electro-Swing Ball forward over the next couple of years. Electro-swing has grown into a vibrant, worldwide scene and shows no sign of stopping. There is a wide ranging interest in all things vintage, and with encouragement from new films such as The Great Gatsby we are excited to see where it will take us. Watch this space, because we have some really unique and interesting events ready to bring to you!
Who’s behind the Ball?
There are many talented performers who make up the Electro-Swing Ball, from DJ’s, producers, circus performers, burlesque beauties, compères and entertainers.
The Electro-Swing Ball was brought to life by Jo Rickard, David Rickard and Andrea Proffitt. We are all really passionate about creating beautiful events and that together with our (yes sometimes obsessive) attention to detail means that we are happy to work hard to create something special.
Resident DJ – DJR
David’s alter-ego is DJR (it was meant to be – they’re his initials!) and he will happily play anything from the most gentle style of classic swing up to the most banging ghetto swing and drum & bass infused tracks. You can listen to mixes and tracks from DJR on soundcloud and follow his facebook updates by clicking like.
If you fancy hearing what he sounds like here’s a minimix he put to showcase the electro-swing sound:
Resident DJ – Bertie Dastard
We are really lucky to have Bertie Dastard as a resident DJ. He is behind the renowned Free Breaks Blog which is internationally known as the best website in the breaks scene. He has over 3000 followers on soundcloud and is a master at playing ghetto funk, ghetto swing and breaks.
Resident Artist – Gary William Matthews
For every Ball we’ve been utterly thrilled to have unique pictures painted for us by the very talented Gary William Matthews. He’s created beautiful works of art that we now frame and display at each event. If you would like Gary to create a bespoke piece for you, you can contact him on facebook.
The Electro-Swing Ball has strong links within the scene with other promoters, artists and performers and we use these to get some of the best acts available.
